The Maserati A6 is the first road car developed and produced by Maserati after World War II.  It first appeared at the 1947 Geneva Motor Show where the Pinin farina bodied berlinetta was well received both by the Press and the Public.

The A6 1500, named for founder Alfieri Maserati and the car's 1.5-liter six-cylinder engine, was the first of the Trident's postwar sports cars and the last designed by the Maserati brothers. Sixty-one A6 1500 were built between 1947 and 1951. The A6 1500's engine was a 1,488cc single-overhead-camshaft six, similar to the A6GCS sports car's 2.0-litre unit, and produced its maximum output of 65bhp at 4,700rpm. Its chassis was of the ladder frame type, the double-wishbone front suspension was derived from racing practice and coil springs suspended the live rear axle. Top speed, depending on coachwork, was in the region of 90-95mph.

Only ten Maserati A6 1500s were equipped during production with triple Weber carburettors. This desirable enhancement considerably raised power from the single-carbureted base version, and signaled the marque's refocusing on performance instead of accommodating postwar low-octane fuel constraints.

The thoroughbred A6 1500 is powered by an aluminum / magnesium derivative of Maserati's 6CM Grand Prix engine, in an innovative tubular chassis and carrying an interior of surprising refinement, a combination of performance and luxury that set the pattern for Maserati road cars of later years. The A6 was essentially sold as a tubular chassis with running mechanical components. The coachwork was completed by famous Italian Carrozzeria like Pinin Farina or Zagato.

The Zagato coachwork is the application of Aerodinamica berlinetta project already proposed in diffrerent version for Ferrari 166 MM, Fiat 1400, MG 1500 or Alfa Romeo 2500 SS. It was a modern design with curious greenhouse large visibility using Plexiglas windows that curved with the roof. It offered more spacious, luminous and more confortable interior for sports cars

Like the contemporaneous Cisitalia 202, the all-aluminum Pinin Farina coachwork was a breakthrough in modern design, incorporating elegant hidden door handles and the classic Maserati grill. Some version were completed with a fastback body while others had distinctive luggage compartment.

One 1948 Maserati A6 1500 with Pinin Farina fastback berlinetta body was sold for US$ 852.500 at 2016 Gooding & Company Auction at Pebble Beach. Another 1949 Pinin Farina fastback berlinetta was sold for US$ 891.000 at 2014 Bonhams auction at Monterey Quail Lodge. In 2015 , one 1949 Maserati A6 1500 berlineta fastback by Pinin Farina was sold for US$ 312.888 at Bonhams Quail Lodge Auction.
